Abstract

508,542. Uniting metal to ceramic materials by heat. BORMANN, O. Dec. 29, 1937, No. 36017. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1936. [Class 36] In a joint formed by the fusion of a glass or enamel flux interposed between an inner ceramic body and an outer metal body having a coefficient of expansion higher than that of the ceramic body, the bodies bear against one another only at a cylindrical joining surface and the metal body is prolonged beyond the two edges of such surface. A steatite tube 2, Fig. 3, is provided with an annular shoulder 5 on to which an annular metal part 3 is shrunk and to which it is sealed by flux 6 having a coefficient of expansion as nearly as possible equal to that of the tube. The part 3, which may be formed of an iron-nickel, iron-chromium, iron-vanadium or aluminium-nickel alloy, is prolonged beyond the joint as a flange 8, as shown, or axially, and is welded to the outer vessel 1. In another form, Fig. 4, a ceramic disc 9 is similarly joined to a metal part 10 welded to the tube 11.
