Abstract
1,196,950. Pipe joints. WEATHERHEAD CO. 27 Nov., 1967, No. 53800/67. Heading F2G. [Also in Division B3] A welded pipe coupling is formed by securing a sleeve 13 about the end of a pipe 11 as by swaging, the said sleeve having an axial projection 31 to define a cylindrical surface 32 concentric with the pipe surface and a pair of radial end surfaces 23, 24 with one of said end surfaces being co-planar with the end face 36 of the pipe, positioning the said cylindrical surface, radial surface and end face in abutting relationship with corresponding surfaces 33, 34, 17 formed at the adjacent end of pipe 10 or fitting, and applying fusion heat along the zone of the mating surfaces to form a single weld bead 37 fusing the mating surfaces together. As shown, the corresponding surfaces are formed by the end of the tube 10 and a similar sleeve having an axial projection 21. The axial projections are sufficiently short to be entirely fused into the weld bead. In modified embodiments, Figs. 2-4 (not shown), the corresponding surfaces are formed on the ends of a T or elbow fitting 41, a boss 51, or a nipple 54. The welding may be effected by a tungsten electrode power-driven around the coupling which is clamped in a fixture or welding head. The fixture may provide a chamber, which can be filled with a suitable gas to eliminate contamination of the weld.
