Abstract
508,532. Milling; drilling. VOMAG MASCHINENFABRIK AKT.-GES. Oct. 26, 1938, No. 30997. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1937. [Class 83 (iii)] In machining a plane surface, the work piece 3 is traversed past a hard metal or diamond tool 1 having front and rear cutting edges and mounted on a stationary rotary spindle perpendicular to the work surface so that overlapping arcuate cuts are taken successively by the front and rear edges of the tool. The tool 1 may have symmetrical cutting edges, so that a series of fine grooves 4 is cut in the advancing work, these grooves being broken up by the back-cuts made while the tool describes the paths 5, 7, 9, &c., so that a final surface such as 12 is produced. In a modification, Fig. 4, the inner cutting edge of the tool is shaped as shown at 14 so that the back-cuts produced by this edge result in finer surface as shown at 121. In another modification, several, preferably two, tools are arranged on the same spindle preferably so that only one of the tools engages the surface at a time. The second tool cuts slightly deeper grooves 18 and is somewhat nearer to the spindle axis than the leading tool so that only the second tool 16 makes back-cuts as shown at 19. By this arrangement a greater amount of material may be removed from the surface 3. The apparatus may also be used in conjunction with fine-drilling apparatus. Thus, the spindle 20 of the surfacing-tool 25 may carry a drilling- spindle 21 which is removed after boring the hole 24 and the work then traversed laterally to true the surface 23. In some cases the spindle 21 may be withdrawn into the milling- spindle after boring the hole. In another modification, parallel milling and boring spindles are arranged side by side on the same machine.
