Turning; planing; boring; lubricating and cooling tools and work; tools. - Metal is machined by means of a tool 2 which removes a. layer of metal at one operation, the operative portion of the cutting-edges being located in the plane dividing the work from the layer to be separated, thereby increasing the rate of working. In the case of wide work-pieces, a number of successive stripping cuts may be necessary. Alternatively, a wide work-piece may first be divided by narrow grooves produced by cutting or by a sharp-edged roller, the layers being then removed in one stroke by a gang of cutters or in a number of strokes by a tool 2 so proportioned that the point and the rear extremities of the cutting-edges run in separating-grooves or outside the work-piece. The grooving and stripping tools may be in one piece or assembled to form a tool which completes the stripping in one cut. A circular saw having independent rotary movement may be employed as a grooving tool. The tools may also be actuated intermittently by compressed air. In a further modification, the stripping-tool may be followed by a smoothing-tool which may be integral with the grooving and stripping tools, or may be used in a second working operation. For conducting away the heat produced by the cutting, the tool may be bored longitudinally and cooled by air or liquid. The method may be applied to turning, in which case the layers are in the form of coaxial cylinders separated by spacing-grooves. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the invention is applicable to depth work such as boring, milling, reaming &c. Other modifications of the arrangement of the grooving and stripping tools are also described. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
