Abstract
508,384. Treating articles with liquids; electrolytic coating and cleaning apparatus. BARLOW, R., and RENOLD, P. Dec. 29, 1937, No. 36037. [Class 41] [Also in Group III] An article such as a can end 39, Fig. 3, the surface of which is to be treated with a liquid is mounted in a chuck 7 and is lowered intocontact with the surface of the liquid which is supplied to a tray 27 by a central pipe 29 and overflows over its walls 28. The tray 27 is preferably dished so as to effect a substantially uniform radial rate of flow. It may be provided with a shoulder 52 whereby liquid is retained by surface tension when the supply is stopped. The treatment may comprise electroplating, electrophoretic deposition of wax or lacquer, anodic oxidation or electrolytic cleaning, the chuck and tray being in these cases insulated and appropriately connected as electrodes ; the treatment may alternatively comprise coating with lacquer by contact with the lacquering liquid. Fig. 2 shows an apparatus comprising chucks 7 mounted on a turret 6 whereby the chucks are brought successively over trays or other devices mounted on a platform 3 for the following operations (1) electrolytic degreasing first anodic then cathodic ; (2) a second electrolytic degreasing followed by anodic treatment; (3) washing ; (4) drying with jets of hot air ; (5) electrodeposition of lacquer; (6) washing; (7) drying with hot air ; (8) removal of the treated articles and re-loading. The articles are supported magnetically, the chucks being energized by coils 8. The tray and chuck shown are insulated from the platform and turret and connected for electrical treatment. The turret 6 is provided with pegs 22 engaging holes in the platform 3 and is supported by collars 23 adjusted to give the requisite clearance between articles and trays. To advance the turret it is lifted against the action of a spring 26 by a pedal-operated tubular member 5 and is turned manually until each peg engages the next hole. The chucks 7 are connected by leads 58 to insulated plungers 56 engaging contacts 53 on the platform in the appropriate positions. The reversal of connections necessary in the degreasing stages is effected by a time switch. The washing in stage (3) is. effected by a conical jet of liquid. The drying in stage (4) is effected by four nozzles, two of which are directed against the inner part of the can end and two against the periphery ; the nozzle support is rotated by the jets. Specitication 479,681 is referred to.
