[Class 37] A dry rectifier has tubular units, such as copper tubes with an outer layer of cuprous oxide covered by a coating of zinc, the outsides being insulated from one another by a moisturerepelling insulating medium. In the example, the units 5 are arranged in an oil-filled container 6 and cooling water or air is passed through them in contact with the bare metal interiors. Current is fed to the units by means of metal clips 11. Parts of the external surface of the tubes may be exposed for cooling purposes, particularly when selenium is used as the semiconductor and is coated on to iron or aluminium tubes. In a modification, the tubes are of U-shape. The cooling medium may pass through the rectifier tubes in series.
