Abstract

507,548. Speedometers; switches. RIEGGER, P. Dec. 23, 1938, No. 37486. [Class 106 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In an instrument which records the speed' of a vehicle by a stylus 4 on a rotating chart 2, a further stylus 18 is provided which contacts continuously with the chart and is moved in a direction which differs from the direction of movement of the part of the chart which it touches by a device which is operated whenever the engine exceeds its maximum permissable speed. The stylus 4 is operated, through a rack and gear wheel connection 10, 12, 14 and 15, by the movement under centrifugal force of a weight 7 carried on a shaft 6 coupled to the wheel axle of the vehicle. The stylus 18 is operated by an electromagnet 25 controlled by a snap action switch 31, 33 and 35 actuated by a similar centrifugal weight system 40 to the above driven directly by the vehicle engine through a shaft 39. In a modification the electromagnet 25 is controlled by a centrifugal switch comprising a disc 48 rotated by the engine and bearing masses mounted on pivoted levers 50 and 51 which operate switch contacts 60 and 59 which are connected by slip rings and brushes to the electromagnet 25. The disposition of the masses is stated to produce a snap action without the necessity of providing special means to this end.
