Abstract
507,468. Roller sun blinds. JONES, A. L., and SMITH, D. K. Nov. 15, 1937, No. 30973/36. [Class 20 (iii)] A sun-blind 1 is provided with side arms 4, 4<1>, pivoted for movement in a plane approximately parallel to the blind, which'may be rotated by gearing, operated by a handle 32, into a downwardly inclined position to reduce the tension of the winding spring in the roller 2 and thus permit the blind to descend under gravity, and into an upwardly inclined position to increase the tension of the spring to cause winding-up of the-blind. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the blind roller 2 is mounted on bearing members 26, 36, free to rotate at the ends of a fixed screwed shaft 37. The member 26 is provided with teeth 25 which engage a pinion of the wheel train operated by the handle 32, and the member 36 engages a flange at the end of the roller by means of ratchet teeth 34. A helical spring 41 encircles the shaft 37 and is secured at one end to the member 36 and at the other end to a nut 39, mounted on the shaft 37, and which engages with a second nut 40 adapted to rotate with the member 26, but free to move longitudinally relative thereto. The tension of the spring may be varied by loosening a nut 42 on the shaft and rotating the member 36 relatively to the flange at the end of the roller. During the movement of the blind structure into the downwardly inclined position, the nut 40 is disengaged from the nut 39 and the-roller 2 freed from the spring 41, thus allowing the blind to unwind. The rotation of the member 36 during the unwinding of the blind tends to increase the tension of the spring 41, the effect of which is to move the nut 39 towards the right until it re-engages with the nut 40, when further movement is prevented, and the blind is kept taut by the spring. When the structure is rotated into the upwardly inclined position, the motion of the wheel 25 causes the nuts 39, 40, to move to the left, thus increasing the tension of the spring 41 which aids the winding of the blind onto the roller. A modification is described in which the side arms of the blind are in the form of lazy-tong members, the structure being rotated by hydraulically operated means.
