nnrrso SVTAITESFPATENT o c PETER ENGLERT, OF LOCK HAVEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
ADJUSTABLE SHADE-ROLLER.
arness.
To a whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, PETER Enennn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lock Haven, in the county off Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Shade-Rollers, of which the following a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of means for supporting, a shade; roller, whereby the shade may be raised or lowered in the usual well known manner, or the roller and shade adjusted-vertically of the window frame to space theshade roller any desired distance from the top of the window when it is desired to ventilate-the room;
To this end, the shade roller is suspended by a flexible elementsecuredto the window frame and to the opposite ends of the roller in a manner to wind about and unwind therefrom, the construction and arrangement of parts being such that when the shade is rolled upon its roller, the tape unwinds from the. latter to allow the roller to be moved downwardly upon the window frame, and when the shade is unwound from I the roller the tape winds about the latter to move the roller in aniupward direction from the window frame, meansjbeing provided to check the winding of the tape about the roller and the unwinding ofthe tape therefrom to hold the shade roller in any desired adjusted position.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detaileddescription is taken in connection with. the accompanying drawings,
. showing the window shade roller in its normal position and supported by .thezrmeans forming the subject matter of my invention. Fig. 2is a similar VlBW'ShOWI lg the shade unwound from the roller or in its lowered I position. r Fig. 3 is a view showing the shade roller in an adjusted position.
Fig. l is a side elevation. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
' S peeificat ion of Letters Patent. te t i 7 .Application filed April 10, 1920. Serial 115372316.
Fig. 6 isa longitudinal section taken through the shade roller and its supportingmeans.
Fig. 7 is a detail view of one of the tape perspective View of the lat-ch dicates the shade roller through which is extended the spring actuated shaft 11, the lat ter pro ecting beyond the opposite ends of the roller 10 for the purpose to be hereinafter described. The shade asindicated at 12 is.
adapted to begwound upon and unwound 1 from the roller 10 in the usual well known The shade roller is suspended from the top ofthe window casing A by means of tapes or flexiblev elements of any suitable character indicated at 14, these tapes having their upper corresponding extremities secured to afixed point, while the opposite ends of the tapes are secured to theends of the shaft 11 in a mannerto be presently described. Secured to the window frame A at the opposite sides thereof, are brackets in-l dicated at B,each .inc1uding an attaching portion 15 from one edge of which projects a forwardly extended flange 16, the. latter beingcontinued'to provide a laterally disposed finger .17 provided with an elongated slot 18. There is one of these brackets for i 1 each of the flexible elements or tapes 14:, the
upper end of each tape being threaded through the slot 18 of the adjacent bracket B and knotted or otherwise suitably secured to the finger 17. ,secured to the projected extremity of the shaft 11, are substantially U-shaped elements constituting guides for the tapes 14, the parallel limbs 19 of each.
thereto,
element is a'spool or "the like 21- to which the'opposite ends of the tape 14. is secured, in such a way that the tape maybewound about or unwound from the spool in a mannor. for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
. The tape l l is passed through the elongated slot 20 in the cross piece or top 21 of each guide element. Also fixed upon the shaft 11 and arranged exteriorly of the guide element is a disk 22 having radially disposed slots 23 adapted to receive the offset extremity 24': of a pivoted rack element 25, the latter being pivoted upon one of the parallel limbs 19 of the guide element. element is of a substantially T-shaped formation, and to the end opposite the end of the cross head from which the off-set extremity projects, is suitably secured a cord or-other flexible element 27 depending therefrom in convenient reach of a person so that the shade may be adjusted in any desired manner. A stem 26 of the latch element terminates to provide a stop lug 28 adapted to contact the adjacent parallel limb of the guide element upon which it is mounted, to
ment in one direction.
In use, the shade 12 together with this roller is normally positioned in the manner illustrated in Fig. l, and the shade 12 may be unwound from the rolle-r and wound thereon in the usual well known manner. However, if it is desired to lower the shade roller from the window frame which is often times desired in order to ventilate the room, the shade 12 is first unwound from the roller and arranged in a manner as shown in Fig. 2. It is of course apparent that the roller 10 is rotated upon the shaft 11 independently of the spool about which the tapes let are wound. After the shade 12 has been lowered in the manner as shown in Fig. 2, the operator takes hold of the lower end of limit the pivotal movement of the latch elethe shade with the left hand, and grasps the operating cord of the latch element with the right hand. By slightly pulling upon the shade with the left hand, and at the same time pulling upon the operating cord of the latch element, the cord pulls the latch element 25 upon its pivot, in a direction to' move the offset extremity 24 fromthe slot 23 of the disk 22. The shade isallowed to wind upon the roller 10, and during this movement of the shade the tapes 14c unwind from the spool with the result that the shade roller is lowered upon the window frame. hen the shade roller has been lowered to the desired position, the operating cord 27 of the latch element is released allowing the latch element to gravitate to an active position, wherein the oif-set extremity 24 positions itself in one of the slots 23. lVhen it is desired to return the roller 10 to a normal position the shade is grasped by the left hand, and the operating cord 27 of the latch element is grasped by the right hand. Both of these members are pulled upon at the same time, and as the shade 12 is unwound from the roller 10, the tape 14 winds upon The latch to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
hat I claim is:
1. The combination with a shade rolle having its spring actuated shaft projecting from the opposite ends thereof, of flexible elements having corresponding terminals securedto the window frame and their opposite terminals secured to said shaft adapted towind there about and unwind therefrom with the lowering and raising of the shade, a substantially U-shaped element mounted upon each projecting end of said shaft and vertically disposed, the cross piece of each element being slotted to receive the adjacent flexible element constituting a guide for the latter, a pivoted latch carried by one of the V-shaped members, and means carried by the shaft and cooperating with said'latch element for holding said latch releasably fixed relatively to the roller for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a shade roller having its spring actuated shaft projecting beyond the opposite ends thereof, of spools carried by the projecting ends of said shaft, flexible elements suspended from the window frame and having their lower corresponding ends secured to said spools, and adapted to be wound and unwound therefrom with the lowering and raising of the shade, a substantially U-shaped element carried by each end of said shaft and vertically disposed, the limbs of said element being arranged at the opposite ends of the adjacent spool, the cross piece of each element having a slot-through which the adjacent flexible element is passed, 7
and constituting a guide for the latter, a disk carried by one end of said shaft and having notches, a pivoted latch element carried by the U-shaped element and having an offset extremity adapted to be received in one of the notches in said disk, to hold said shaft fixed relatively to-said roller, means for operating the latch from a remote point, and means for limiting the movement of the latch in one direction. I y
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
