[Class 94 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In machines for applying sealing strips to the collapsed ends of containers, a ram pushes in one stroke, a strip of metal through a die to bend it into channel shape and into apparatus for feeding the bent strip to the collapsed end of a container. A web 2, Fig. 2, of metal strip is pulled from a roll past a tensioning roller by a gripping jaw 7 on an oscillating lever 6. The lever is oscillated by a crank-pin 16 in a block 18 moving in a slot 6a in the lever, and the throw may be adjusted by rotating the crank-pin on an eccentric mounting 15. The forward end of the strip enters slots 23, 24 in a die 22, Fig. 4, and during the return of the lever 6, a length is severed from the web by knives 19, 20. The severed length is thrust out of the die by a ram 25, being thereby bent into channel shape, and is received in a pocket 27a of a carrier wheel 27. The openings of the pockets are contracted to prevent the strips from falling out while the wheel rotates and carries them to the applying position. The cartons P with their top edges collapsed, are fed beneath the carrier wheel by plates 32 projecting from a conveyer chain 31. A slide 29, Fig. 6, is arranged above the path of the conveyers and carries a guide 30 which controls the top of the carton and moves with it, but at a slower speed until the carton is completely within the lowermost slot of the carrier wheel and the guide is about to enter the slot. The speed of the guide is now accelerated up to that of the container, arid it engages the end of the metal strip, and pushes it out of the slot, in position on the carton, into the grip of rollers s, t, a, b, arranged as described in Specification 445,253, for clamping the strip.
