(Cl. 113-1) This invention relates to machines of the general nature described in Patents Nos. 2,216,733 and 2,300,099, dated October 8, 1940, and October 27, 1942, respectively, and in my copending application Ser. No. 550,964 filed December 5, 1955, for forming pouring spouts and insert ing them into the walls of containers. The invention particularly relates to the handling of pouring spouts of the general type disclosed in Patents Nos. 1,966,284 and 2,011,434, dated July 10, 1934, and August 13, 1935, respectively, although the machine embodying the present invention may be utilized for inserting other types of pouring spouts into other containers.
In general, machines of this type include means whereby at one station the spouts in flat blank form are fed successively, the blanks are bent to form body portions and sector-shaped wings in angular relation thereto, prongs are stamped up from the body portions of the spouts, and the containers are fed past said station, the completed spouts being inserted into and secured to the walls of the containers as the containers move past said station.
In the machine described in Patent No. 2,216,733, mandrels mounted on a turret are inserted into open upper ends of the containers with a snug frictional fit and the containers are carried by the mandrels to the station at which the spouts are inserted by the mandrels during rotation of the turret, into the containers; and.
the mandrels also carry anvils that cooperate with a spout-pushing member or ram for clinching the prongs of the spouts on the walls of the containers.
The machine described in my copending application Ser. No. 550,964 embodies a conveyor for moving the containers successively into the spout-inserting position adjacent the spout-pushing member or ram, and an anvil is movable into the container through one open end thereof at the side of a zone of the wall of the container opposite the spout-pushing ram so as to support said zone under the thrust of the ram during the insertion of the spout, and the anvil is then retracted out of the con tainer after the insertion of the spout.
One object of the present invention is to provide a machine of this general character which shall embody a novel and improved construction, combination and arrangement of a conveyor for the containers, means for forming and inserting the spouts into the cartons, an anvil for supporting the spout-carrying zone of the container during the insertion of the spout, and means for actuating said anvil into and out of cooperative relation to the spout inserting mechanism and to clear the anvil from the inserted spout as the container moves to and from the spout-inserting position.
Another object is to provide in such a machine novel and improved means for moving the anvil into and out of cooperative relation to the spout-inserting ram and for momentarily synchronously moving the ram and the anvil with each container as the latter is conveyed to and from the spout-inserting position.
A further object is to provide in a machine of this character a novel and improved anvil permanently mounted in opposed relation to the spout-inserting ram at the side of the path of movement of said container zone in its own plane opposite the ram, and means for moving the anvil toward and away from the ram in directions transverse of said path of movement and in juxtaposition to said container zone simultaneously with the movemnet of the ram toward and from said container zone. p
A further object of the invention is to provide a spoutinserting machine of the general character described which shall be especially useful in the attachment of pouring spouts to the closure flaps of containers.
Other objects are to provide a container-spout inserting machine which shall be simple, easy to assemble and disassemble, and reliable and durable in operation, and to obtain other advantages and results that will be brought out by the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a schematic top plan view of a container spout-inserting machine embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view of the machine taken from approximately the plane of the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary, transverse vertical sectional view approximately on the plane of the line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary front elevational view on a reduced scale and approximately on the plane of the line 44 of Figure 3 with the container conveyor and a container illustrated by dot and dash lines;
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view on a reduced scale approximately on the plane of the line 5-5 of Figure 3 with portions of the machine omitted for clearness in illustration, showing the first step in the movement of the spout by the spout-inserting ram from the spout-forming mechanism to the zone of the container in which the spout is to be inserted;
Figure 6 is a similar view showing the next successive step in the spout inserting operation;
Figure 7 is a view like Figure 6 showing the spout completely inserted into the container zone; I
Figure 8 is a similar view showing the anvil moved away from and clear of the spout flanges to permit continued movement of the container by the conveyor;

Figure 17 is a similar view showing the parts as illustrated in Figures 7 and 12; and
Figure 18 is a similar view showing the Parts as illustrated in Figures 8 and 13.
Generally describing the invention, a strip of fiat spout blanks connected in end-to-end relation is fed step by step to successively locateL'the blanks in proper relation .:to dies which bend the.-sector-shaped wings of each spout relatively to the body portion of the spout and to form theprongs inthe body portion of thespout, after :which the-completed spout at the leading end of the blank strip is projected into the spout-inserting mechanism, severed from the strip and pushed through and clinched on a predetermined zone of a container wall, .there .being one spout blank bent and punched simul- --taneously with the shearing and conveying of the next succeeding spout. The containers are moved one after another byaa conveyor into the spout-insertingposition injuxtaposition to the spout-inserting mechanism just prior to the severing of the spout from the blank strip whereupon the anvil is movedinto cooperative juxtaposition-to the container will and the spout-inserting ram,
.and the ram, spout and container are moved momentarily synchronously while the ram forces the flanges of the spout through the wall of the container and clinches the ,prongs of the spout on said wall; then during the formation of the next succeeding spout the anvil is moved away from the ram and from the inserted spout and the ram and-anvil are returned to their initial position ready toreceive the next container between them for the insertion of the next spout.
For the purposes of illustrating the principles of the invention, the spout I herein contemplated comprises a body portion a, prongs b on the body portion to penetrate and be clinched upon 'a container wall for securing the spout therein, and wings or flanges c to slidably en- I gage the edges of the pouring opening of the container 'as the spout is swung from closed to open position on the portion of the container will to which the body of the spout is connected and which serves as a hinge for the "spout.
While other spout "forming and feeding mechanisms may be utilized for the purpose of illustration, I have shown mechanism A like that disclosed in Patents Nos.
2,300,099 and 2,654,332 which includes a support 'or bracket A that is secured to and suspended from a main frame B which is in turn mounted on a pedestal C whose base -Dsupports the machine on anysuitable surface such as a building floor.
The-containers E may be moved in succession to and away from the spout-inserting position in juxtaposition 'to-the-spout-inserting ram, in any suitable manner, but 'as shown an endless belt F is mounted on pulleys which are in turn carried by the respective shafts g that are :journaled in any suitable supporting frame (not shown) and one of which is driven by any suitable source of power in known manner. As shown, the belt F is arranged so that one reach thereof is movable in the directions shown by the arrow in Figure l longitudinally :of a container-supporting table G, the belt having equidistantly spaced pairs of flights h projecting perpendicularly therefrom with the flights of each pair spaced apart 'a distance to nicely receive one of the containers E between them so that during operation of the conveyor belt the containers will be slid along the table G one after the other or in file formation past the spoutinserting mechanism which is generally designated H.
The particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings is especially adapted to the insertion of the pouring spouts I into one of the closure'flaps i of reach of the containers B. As shown, each container has .two main closure flaps i and k and two secondary closure flaps I that are shorter than the flaps i and k and have portions of their juxtaposed edges cut away at m to provide an opening for pouring the contents from the container through the pouring opening provided when the spout is in open position. Preferably, channel shaped guide'rails J are provided for holding the main container flaps i and k in upright position or coplanar with the corresponding side walls of the container while the containers are being moved past the spout inserting mechanism, said rails being mounted in any suitable manner, for example by bracket arms K. connected to the main frame B and having the rails suspended therefrom.
While the machine of the present invention may be utilized for inserting diiferent types of spouts or other articles into dilferent forms of containers or other supports, as above indicated, for the purpose of illustration, a strip L comprising a plurality of flat spout blanks connected-in end-to end'relation, is shown, each blank being shaped to provide a body portion and side wings of a finished spout I (s'ee Figures 3 and 5 The blank strip is supplied to a spout blank feeding mechanism which includ'es'a guideway 1 which is shown as formed between two plates 2 and 3 the latter of which is hingedly connected at 4 on a horizontal axis of the bracket A. Preferably a fiat spring 5 is provided in the recess between the plates 2 and 3 for yieldingly fr-ictionally holding the blank strip against movement.
The feeding mechanism for the blank stripincludes a block 6 slidably mounted in the outer plate 2 and having pivotally connected thereto at 7 a pair of feed dogs 8 which are connected to move together by a crossrod 9 at their lower ends. The upper ends of the dogs have inturned fingers 10 to engage behind the edges of the respective blanks of the blank strip as shown in Figures -3 and 6, the feed dogs being normally influenced into feeding relation to the blank strip by a springpressed plunger 6. The block 6 and dogs 8 are reciprocated with a step-by-s'tep movement to feed the blank strip one blank at a time, by a lever 11 which is journaled intermediate its ends at 12 on an arm 13 projecting from thebrackets A and 'has' a pin and slot connection 14 at one end with the block 6 and its other end provided with a following roller 15 that engages a horizontal cam 16 carried by a vertical drive shaft 17 journaled in suitable bearings including a bearing 18 on the'bracket A. The drive shaft 17 may be connected to any suitable source of power in any suitable manner known -to those skilled in the art; for example, the shaft 17 may be connected by beveled gearing 17 to a motor or to some power-transmitting shaft of a container-forming or "container-filling machine.
"the 'guideway. The movable die is reciprocable on a bracket 27 forming a part of the auxiliary frame A which is supported on the pedestal C in any suitable manner. The two dies are so shaped as to bend up the side wings o of the spout when the reciprocating die 26 is moved toward the die 25 from the position shown in Figure 12 to the position shown in Figure 14, and simultaneously, the prongs b of the next succeeding spout blank are formed by punches 29 carried by the die 26, all in substantially the same manner as shown and described in Patent No. 2,216,733. The reciprocation of the die 26 is shown as effected by a cam 30 which is engaged by follower rollers 31 on a plate extension 32 of the die block 26, the plate extension having a slot 33 through which passes the countershaft 17 that is jourmailed in the bracket 27 and in the top plate 35 of the machine and upon which'the cam 30 is mounted. Instead of the. spout-forming mechanism above described, we might use spout-forming mechanism like that shown in Patent No. 2,300,099, dated October 27, 1942.
The spout-inserting mechanism H is disposed above the guideway 1 and includes a spout holder and carrier 3'6'that is movable momentarily synchronously with each container E and juxtaposed to the "flap ibf'the container as the container moves in its predetermined path to the spout inserting mechanism. As shown, the holder is mounted on a slide 37 slidable in a slot 38 in a frame plate 39 that constitutes a part of the main frame B of the machine. The spout holder and carrier 36 slides along the bottom surface of the plate 39, and a cam follower plate 40 is connected to the slide 37 and is slidable on the upper surface of said plate 39 as best shown in Figures 3 and 15. As shown, the spout holder, slide and cam follower plate are connected together by screws 41.
In accordance with the invention means is provided for first actuating the spout holder from an initial starting or normal position in the direction of movement of the containers and synchronously with said movement during the insertion of the spout into the container and then rapidly returning the spout holder to its initial position for insertion of a spout into the next succeeding container. This means is shown as comprising follower rollers 42 and 43 on the cam follower plate 40 which engage the respective cams 44 and 45 that are mounted on the drive shaft 17 to rotate therewith as shown in Figures 3 and '15.
During the momentary synchronous movement of the spout holder with each container, a spout is inserted into the flap i of the container while said flap is juxtaposed to the spout-inserting mechanism as shown in Figures 3 and 5-7 inclusive. The spout holder has a spout-receiving channel 46 into which leads the guideway 1 of the spoutforming mechanism, and a ram 47 is slidable in said channel successively to sever the spout from the spout blank strip, to push the completed spout through the channel and to insert the flanges and prongs of the spout through said flap i of the container while the anvil M supports the flap against the thrust of the ram. As shown, the ram 47 has a knife edge 47' which cooperates with an edge 49 on the die 25 so as to cut the completed spout from the spout blank strip upon movement of the die block 26 to form the spout flanges from the position shown in Figures 3, 5 and 9 to the position shown in Figures 6 and 10. The pusher or ram may be of any suitable construction, but as shown the ram comprises a bar which has a cross sectional shape approximately corresponding to that of the channel 46 and has an arm 50 which carries a roller 51 that rides in a cam slot 52 which is disposed in a plate 53 connected, as by cap screws 54, to the die block 26 (Figures 3, 5 and 9). With this construction, it will be observed that the roller 51 will be caused to move to the left in Figure 6 when the spout holder is moved synchronously with the container (downwardly in Figure 6) so as to push the spout through the channel 46 and through the container flap i as shown in Figures 6, 7, and 12, and that the movement of the spout holder with the container will continue long enough to permit the ram 47 to push the spout into the container as shown in Figure 7 and to allow the anvil M to be moved clear of the inserted spout as shown in Figures 8 and 13.
From the foregoing it will be clear that the anvil M must move synchronously with the movement of the spout holder in the direction of movement of the container past the spout-inserting position. This may be accomplished conveniently by mounting the anvil on the spout holder, and as shown, the anvil includes an angular lever 55 pivotally mounted intermediate its ends at 56 on a bracket 57 that is fixedly connected to the spout holder 36 by screws 58, the lever having an anvil block 60 mounted on one end thereof to swing toward and away from the end of the spout channel 46 upon oscillation of the lever, and the other end of the lever having a roller 61 journaled thereon and arranged in and to follow a cam slot 62 in a plate 63 that is secured to the plate 39 of the main frame B by screws 64. The shape of the cam slot 62 is best shown in Figure 4 and includes a straight portion 62 which normally holds the lever 55 in the position to locate the anvil block 60 in juxtaposed spaced relation to the end surface of the spout holder through which opens the spout'channel 46 so as to receive the container flap i between the anvil block and the spout holder as best shown in Figures 3 and 5. This is the initial or normal starting position of the anvil that corresponds to the initial starting or normal position of the spout holder, and the anvil block is held in this position during the major portion of the movement of the spout holder by the cam 45 synchronously with the container from the position shown in Figure 16 to the position shown in Figure 18 and until the spout has been completely inserted into the container flap with the prongs b clinched on the flap; but near the end of said movement of the spout holder the roller 61 on the lever 55 rides into a downwardly offset portion 62" of the slot 62 so as to swing the lever 55 and move the anvil block 60 away from the container flap and the inserted spout as shown in Figures 13 and 18 so that the container with the spout therein may continue to move without interference from the anvil block, as shown in Figures 8 and 13. Immediately thereafter, the spout holder is started by the cam 44 on its return movement to its initial position. It will be noted that the cam 45 has a dwell which engages the roller 42 at the proper time to hold the spout holder momentarily stationary during the first portion of the spout-actuating movement of the ram. It will be understood that the movement of the spout holder, the movement of the ram, the movement of the anvil lever, and the movement of the containers by the conveyor belt F are in proper timed relation, which is accomplished by proper construction of the driving mechanism for the conveyor belt pulley F and proper shaping of the cams 44, 45, 30 and the cam slots 52 and 62.
The anvil block (Figures 3 and 11) has two slots 60' therein to receive the respective flanges or wings a of the spout and the face on the anvil block has two curved concave recesses 60'? to bend down or clinch the prongs b as the ram completes the insertion of the spout into the container flap i, as best shown in Figures 14, 7 and 12.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that the secondary flaps l of the container will be simply bent downwardly automatically out of the way by contact with the anvil block so that no special guides are necessary. It will also be apparent that by providing means for moving the anvil block into and out of the container body simultaneously with the swinging of the anvil block toward and from the end of the spout channel in the spout holder, the spout could be inserted into the main wall of the container below the flap.
After the spout has been completely inserted into the container as described, the container is conveyed away by the conveyor belt F and table G to any suitable point, for example a container filling machine.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a machine having certain structural details, it will be understood that this is primarily for the purpose of illustrating the now preferred form of the invention and that many modifications and changes can be made in the construction of the machine within the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A machine for mounting a pouring spout in a zone of a wall of a container, comprising means for supporting and moving such. a container with said zone disposed in a predetermined path, a frame, spout-holding means movably mounted on said frame, means for causing movement of said spout-holding means momentarily synchronously with the container along and parallel to a portion of said path, means including a spout inserting ram and an anvil that are mounted on said spout-holding means and movable therewith in spaced opposed relation to each other with one thereof at each of opposite sides of said path of movement of said wall zone to receive said zone of the container wall between them and that are movable relatively to said spoutholding means and toward and from each other transversely of said path of movement, said. ram'and anvil having coacting portions to secure said spout to said zone of the container wall upon movement of said ram. and said anvil toward each other, and means for causing such relative movement of said ram and said anvil during said momentary synchronous movement of the spout-holding means with the container.
2. A machine from mounting a pouring spout in a predetermined zone of 'one wall of a container, comprising means for supporting and moving such a container with said zone disposed in a predetermined path, a frame, spout-holding means movably mounted on said frame, means for causing movement of said spout holding means first in one direction momentarily synchronously with said container along and parallel to a portion of said path and then in the opposite direction, means including two coacting parts that are movable with said spout-holding means and are. movable in opposed relation toward and away from each other at each of opposite sides of said path of movement of said wall zone to receive said zone of the container wall between them, said parts having coactive portions. to secure said spout to said zone of the container upon movement toward each other and being cleared from the mounted spout upon their movement away from each other to permit continued movement of the container wall zone in said path, and means for causing said movement of said coacting parts toward each other during a portion of said momentary synchronous movement of the spout-holding means and the container and for causing said movement of said parts away from each other during the remainder of said momentary synchronous movement.
3. A machine as defined in claim 2 wherein both of said parts are mounted on said spout-holding'means.
4. A machine as defined in claim 2 wherein both of said parts are mounted on said spout-holding means and the last named means includes a cam on said frame and a follower for said cam connectedto one of said parts, and a second cam connected to said frame and a follower for said second cam connected to the other of said parts.
5. A machine as defined in claim 2 wherein both of said parts are mounted on said spout-holding means and said means for causing said movement of the spout-holding means includes a cam mechanism rotatably mounted on said frame and a follower for said cam mechanism mounted on said frame and connected to said spoutholding means.
6. A machine as defined in claim 2 wherein both of said parts are mounted on said spout-holding means and said means for causing movement of the spout-holding means includes a cam mechanism rotatably mounted on said frame and a follower for said cam mechanism mounted on said frame and connected to said spout-holding means and the last-named means includes acam on said frame and a follower for said cam connected to one ofsaid parts, and a second cam connected to said frame and a follower for said second cam: connected to the other of said parts.
7. A machine as defined in claim 2 wherein both of said parts are mounted on said spout-holding meansand said means for causing said movement of the spout-hold ing; means includes two cams mounted on said frame to rotate simultaneously, and a follower for said cams mounted on said frameand having a roller thereon contacting each cam.
8. Amachine as defined in claim 2 wherein one of said coacting parts includes a lever pivoted intermediate its endson said spout holding means and having an anvil at one end and a cam follower at its other end, while the other of said parts includes a reciprocable ram for moving a'spout -in said spout-holding means and having'a cam follower thereon, and the last-named means includes a 8 cam onsaid; frame: engaged by said: cam follower onsaid lever, and acam connectedx to. said frame andengaging the cam follower." on saidln'anr, so' that. said lever is urged to move. said anvil successively toward and away from saidiram during movement of said: spout holding means in the first-mentioned direction and said ram and. said spout are actuated toward. said anvil during movement of the. spout-holding means in the first-mentioned direction and the ram is-moved. away from said anvil during move? ment of'the spout-holdingmeans in the opposite direction.
9. A machine as defined in claim 2 wherein one of said coacting partsincludes. a lever pivoted intermediate its ends on said spout holding means and having an avil at one end'and a cam follower atits other end, so that the lever-is urged to move-the anvil successively toward and away from the other part during said movement of the spout-holding means in the first-mentioned direction,
