Abstract

506,462. Motor tractors &c. LUTZ, H. May 27, 1938, Nos. 15859, 15860, and 15861. Convention dates, May 27, 1937, June 14,1937, and April 5, 1938. [Classes 79(i) and 79 (iii)] In motor tractors in which the engine fuel is supplied by a gas producer, the producer is mounted in front of the engine, displacing the engine radiator which is arranged at one side, so as to avoid an elongated construction and transfer of weight from the rear wheels. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the gas producer 5, 6 is mounted in front of a transverse engine 1 which drives the rear wheels through spur gearing 4, the engine radiator 20 and a radiator 21 for cooling the producer gas being arranged 'on opposite sides of the engine. The lower part 5 of the gas producer, which is attached to or cast in one with the engine block and gear casing to form a tractor body aggregate, is located partly in front of and above the front wheel axle, being formed with a sloping bottom and an ash-removing door 16. The upper part 6 of the producer, which is separated from the engine by a gap 17, is formed with lateral extensions 8 with sloping bottoms 8a under which are housings 12 for gas purifiers, water tanks, &c. Cooling air is forced through the radiators by fans 22, 23, the air passing over the engine from the radiator 20 being guided by a partition 24 into the transverse gap or passage 17 which is enclosed by a louvred cover. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the engine is arranged longitudinally, a single fan 27 drawing air through both radiators into the' passage 17. Other modifications are described in which the radiators are arranged at the front on each side of the gas producers which may be formed with vertical sides or with lateral extensions 8, as in Fig. 3, the radiators replacing the housings 12 in this case.
