[Class 75 (i)] Annular wicks for blue-flame lamps, stoves and heaters are stiffened by metal plates 3 extending down the tail portions 2 from slightly above the lower end of the cylindrical portion 1. The metal plates 3 are secured to the wicks at the top and sides by prongs 4 and are provided at the base with sockets or eyelets 5 engaged by the wick-operating mechanism below the level of the burner basket 11. In the construction shown, the wick-operating spindle 16 extends through two opposite side-draught passages 9 and carries a pinion 19 engaging a rack 20 slidable in a guide 21 on a horizontal partition 13 extending across the inner wick tube, and a horizontal bar 22 secured to the rack carries a rod 23 passing through the eyelets 5. The sockets or eyelets 5 may be formed in or fixed to the plates 3 or formed in or fixed to the wick and secured, for example, by press stud elements to the plates 3. The inner wick tube may be extended downwardly and formed with guide-slots through which the rod 23 passes. Alternatively, the rod 23 may be bent upwardly and secured to the upper end of the rack 20, the bar 22 being dispensed with. According to one Provisional Specification, the stiffening of the wick may be effected by chemical impregnation or by the application of textile or adhesive stiffening elements.
