Abstract

504,993. Electric insulation; cables. PATENTVERWERTUNGS-GES. HERMES. Aug. 17, 1938, No. 24255. Convention date, Aug. 20, 1937. Drawings to Specification. [Class 36] [Also in Group VIII] Strips or ribbons of insulating material are made by dispersing a mixture of a filler such as quartz meal, heavy spar, magnesium oxide or magnesium carbonate with slag wool or stone wool fibres in a liquid such as water, if desired with the addition of adhesives such as water glass, silica gel, porcelain or marble cements, or cellulosic fibres such as manilla, forming a strip or ribbon therefrom and drying. The dispersion is worked up in a manner similar to papermaking and the strip may be calendered during or after drying. The strips may be wound or spun on to or folded around a conductor and coils produced from such insulated conductors, may be subsequently impregnated in vacuo with aqueous dispersions of ceramic masses such as kaolin, porcelain earth, clay or enamel and baked at a high temperature e.g. 800‹ C. Artificial resin or chloronaphthalene may also be used as impregnants. The strip may be wound to form cylinders which may be similarly impregnated. The strips may be used as insulation in furnace transformers, and may be shaped to provide insulating bushings.
