504,970. Glass &c. yarns. SOC.. ANON. VETRERIA ITALIANA BALZABETTIMODIGLIANI. April 14, 1938, No. 11605. Convention date, April 19, 1937. [Class 120 (iii)] Glass ribbons constituted of glass filaments and adapted to be converted into spun yarns or threads are made by preparing a lap of glass filaments crossing each other at a constant acute angle, the filaments being fed to a rotating drum from a reciprocating furnace, then sever - ing the lap along the periphery of the drum parallel to the axis of rotation thereof, stretching the lap after removal from the drum to produce a parallel arrangement of the filaments and cutting the stretched lap parallel to the general lie of the filaments into the ribbons ; the filaments may be fed to the drum from a stationary furnace in which case the filaments in the lap are parallel to one another and the stretching step is omitted. As shown the laps 5a removed from the drum and with the filaments arranged parallel to one another, are placed on a continuously moving support 6 with their ends in line and partly overlapping and with the filaments extending in the direction of movement of the support and are cut into ribbons 8 by rotary or stationary knives 7, the ribbons being then fed to the spinning or twisting devices 9 and wound on spools 10.
