Abstract

504,283. Photograghic light-sensitive and image-bearing layers. KODAK, Ltd., and MARRIAGE, A. Oct. 21, 1937, No. 28717. [Class 98 (ii)] Small particles of a diffusing material which is insoluble in and inert to the material of the layers and has a refractive index not less than 1À75, are incorporated in light-sensitive or image-bearing layers. The material. is preferably a pigment. It should absorb as little as possible of the light used for viewing or printing and is preferably white. The material may be mixed with the gelatine used for preparing a light-sensitive layer or may be incorporated in the layer before or after exposure or processing by a process of precipitation. The size of the particles is preferably not greater than the average size of the particles of light-sensitive material, e.g. silver halide particles. Suitable compounds are titanium dioxide and the oxide or a basic salt of bismuth, e.g. bismuth oxychloride or oxybromide. Barium phosphate may also be precipitated in the layer by successive bathing in solutions of barium chloride and sodium phosphate. Examples are given of processes of incorporating titanium dioxide and bismuth oxybromide in silver halide emulsions. The quantity of material used may be from 10 per cent to 40 per cent by weight calculated on the dry weight of the layer and in the case of pigments of refracture index not less than 2À1, 5 per cent by weight may be used. Multilayer material having light-sensitive layers incorporating pigment, on both sides of a support is referred to.
