Abstract
503,091. Engine stop-gears; temperature-alarms; preventing fires. DRIESSEN, M. G. Sept. 30, 1937, No. 26530. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1936. [Class 122 (iv)] [Also in Group XXI] An internal - combustion engine is stopped or an alarm is operated when the temperature of the exhaust gases becomes excessive due to the thermal expansion of a metal element due to their heat. On the exhaust pipe 1 are arranged brackets 2; 3. Rods 4 are pivoted or fixedly secured to the bracket 2 and carry a pin 6 which can slide in an aperture in the bracket 3 which carries a knife edge 7 adjustably secured thereto by a screw 8 and lock nut. The knife edge engages a groove 9 in a spring- pressed lever 10 pivoted to the rods 4 on an axis 11. The outer end 7 of the lever 10 is notched and engages a spring-pulled lever 13 which is released when the pipe expands abnormally. The lever 13 is carried on an axle 14 which carries a bell crank connected by a rod 18 to mechanism to cut off the fuel supply or otherwise stop the engine, or to an alarm, and a pin 19 which limits the motion. The coefficient of expansion of the rods 14 may be greater than, but is preferably less than, that of the pipe 1. 'The rods may, e.g. be of " Invar " (Registered Trade Mark) steel or of cast iron.
