Abstract
502,796. Cathode-ray tubes. McGEE, J. D. Aug. 23, 1937, No. 23019. [Class 39 (i)] In multiple-spot scanning, cathode-ray tubes for television &c. such as those described in Specification 432,485, the source of electrons is constituted by an indirectly heated cathode structure having separate emissive members 8 insulated from each other and from the heater 10 and provided with individual leads 9. Each member 8 serves as electron source for one scanning spot and is arranged opposite the space between transverse wires 5 welded or soldered across a long rectangular slot 4 in the cathode shield 3. The control potentials are applied through a timedelay circuit to the members 8, these members being biassed positively so that electrons do not pass from them through the slot 4 in the absence of the control potentials. The non-inductively wound heater 10 is arranged in a tube 6 of ceramic material or of metal coated with alumina or magnesia; in the latter case, the tube 6 is welded to the shield 3 through rods 11 and is maintained at constant potential to reduce electrostatic coupling between adjacent elements 8. The elements 8 consist of wound nickel strips sprayed with emissive oxides, and the spaces between the elements are protected by windings of cotton thread during the spraying.
