[Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii), and 83 (iv)] Casting-machines; casting composite articles; stamping.-A brake drum is made by inwardly flanging the ends of a thin sheet steel cylinder, cleaning its inner surface and applying a coating to exclude air, centrifugally casting iron therein, subdividing to produce a number of rings, and joining one of these rings to a back ptate 35, Fig. 8, by flanging and welding at 36. The flanged cylinder is placed in segments 3, Fig. 4, of a grooved mould which is bound by a wire 6 and then secured in pivoted jaws 10 of a chuck which after closing and preferably heating to 500 to 1100‹ F., is drawn within a conical bore 7. The whole is then rotated by a shaft 8 and cast iron at 2700 to 3100‹ F. is poured in by means of a tilting trough 18. The pressure of the hot metal causes the cylinder 1 to take the form of the inner face of the mould 3 or the cylinder may be grooved at 28, 29 before insertion. The lined cylinder is then machined and divided by tools 30, 32, 33, Fig. 5, to form rings each having a projection 34 of steel for flanging over a back plate.
