[Class 100 (i)] To ensure correct register of sheets at the front stops 12 on the layboard of a sheet-feeding apparatus a supplementary sheet impelling device is adapted to engage the rear edge of each sheet as it approaches the stops so as to give the sheet thrust in the feeding direction additional to that of the normal feeding means. As applied to a stream feeder in which the sheets are fed by tapes and running-in wheels 13 and under smoothers 17, and in which the rear edge of each sheet overlaps the front edge of the following sheet, the impelling device comprises a pair of pull rods 19 fitted with claws 31 for engaging the rear edge of the front sheet as the rods 19 are moved to the left by means of reciprocating rods 20 connected to levers 22 on a shaft 23 which is rocked by a connecting- rod 30, lever 27, and slotted crank 25 from a cam on the sheet-feeding apparatus. The rods 19 are spring-mounted and pivoted to adjustable blocks 32 on the rods 20, and after the sheet has been engaged by the claws 31, and the sheet registered, the rods are raised above the sheets on their return motion by means of pivoted switches 40, Fig. 2, which engage pins 46 on the rods 19. The pins 46 move under the switches when moving to the left, but on reverse movement the pins ride over the switches, which are adjustably mounted on rods 43. For dealing with short sheets the rods 19 can be reversed and effect a pushing instead of a pulling action. A modified form of impelling rod 50 is shown in Fig. 3, which is fitted on its underside with a plate 51 formed with two operating edges 52, 53 so that the rod can be used as a pull or push rod.
