Abstract

502,091. Regulating liquids. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Sept. 7, 1937, No. 24405. [Class 135] A high-pressure liquid, in particular a liquid containing solid matter in suspension, e.g. the residue withdrawn from the reaction vessel or hot catchpot in plant for the destructive distillation of coal, is released from pressure by admitting the mixture in small quantities to a cylinder Z in which a piston K is adapted to be reciprocated and which is provided with a valve - controlled inlet A for the high-pressure mixture, a valve controlled outlet B for the mixture at low pressure, and high and low-pressure auxiliary-liquid conduits o, n respectively controlled by valves E, C. The Figure shows the cylinder during admission of the high-pressure mixture, with the inlet valve A open and the upper side of the piston subject to the high-pressure auxiliaryliquid, the effective pressure of the latter being slightly less than that of the mixture to be released. The supply of mixture is maintained until the cylinder is filled to a predetermined degree, whereupon the pressure above the piston is reduced by closing the valve E and opening the valve C, so that the piston will move up until the desired degree of pressure release of the mixture is attained. The outlet valve B is then opened to atmosphere and the mixture ejected by the low-pressure auxiliaryliquid until only sufficient of the mixture remains in the cylinder to constitute a brake, when the outlet valve B and valve C are closed and the valve E is opened to cause the brake liquid to be compressed to the pressure of the original mixture. A further quantity of the high-pressure mixture is then admitted to the cylinder. The valves A, B, G, E, are preferably actuated automatically in their proper order by liquid from the conduit o under the combined controls of a piston valve coupled to the rod of the piston K and additional valves subjected to the pressures on the upper side of the piston.
