Abstract

501,954. Upsetting - machines. NATIONAL MACHINERY CO. March 31, 1938, No. 9866. Convention date, March 31, 1937. [Class 83 (iv)] A cold heading-machine particularly for making bolts, nuts, &c. has a header slide, reciprocated by a crank-shaft, and carrying a tool co-operating with a die and with a knockout, and also has shearing means for cutting blanks. The chief feature of invention lies in using a single eccentric for driving the knockout and shears in timed relation with the header slide. The eccentric may also drive the feed mechanism in addition to the shears and knockout. As shown, a shaft 2 carries an eccentric 50 with a shaft 51 integrally formed with a connecting-rod 52. The latter is connected at one end to a pivot 53 on a crank 54 secured to a cam-shaft 6. Oscillation of the cam-shaft 6 operates a cam 25 acting on a lever 21 with spaced arms carrying rollers 23, 24. The lever 21 is pivoted at 22 and effects a substantially vertical reciprocation of the shear blade assembly 20. Reciprocation takes place in a plane 88¢‹ from the horizontal. During each cycle of the machine the axis of the shearing quill is lowered to the line 70, along which the stock 11 is fed. During shearing the blank is raised to the line 72.
