Abstract
501,583. Two-part couplings -combined with switches. PREMIER ELECTRIC HEATERS, Ltd., and NEWTON, A. E. July 1, 1937, No. 18263. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A device for controlling the supply of current to an immersion heater in a kettle or the like comprises a socket on which the immersion heater is mounted, a thermally responsive element, such as a bimetallic strip, on the inner wall of the socket, and an insulating plug in the socket carrying terminal pins and a switch member operated by the thermally responsive element. The Figure shows anarrangcment in which the bimetallic strip 26 curries a bushing 28 into which is screwed a pin 29 with a glass head 30 bearing on a spring blade 23. The blade 23 is mounted on the insulating plug 19 and connected to the contact pin 21 ; it carries one of a pair of contact pieces 24, the-other of which is carried on a rigid piece 22 connected to one end of the immersion heater 13. The pin 29 can be adjusted by means of a tool passed through an opening in the plug 19 to engage a pinion 31. Instead of the pin being adjustable it may engage an adjustable abutment on the blade 23, or an adjustable pin may be mounted on the blade. In a further modification the head 30 enters with a wedging action between the pieces 24. The contact member shown fixed in the drawings may also be mounted on a bimetallic strip, or the two common contact members may also be mounted on such a strip which brings them on heating towards the pin 29.
