Abstract

500,938. Removing slag. CARDOX (GREAT BRITAIN), Ltd. Oct. 5, 1938, No. 28881. Convention date, Oct. 5, 1937. [Class 51 (ii)] Expanding highly compressed gas obtained from cartridges 18 containing liquid. CO2 inserted in drill holes 17 is liberated into the cracks of and used to break up the slag deposit 15 in an open hearth furnace slag pocket. Removal of a false brick lining surrounding the deposit gives room for expansion of the slag on breaking up. Water in the drill holes produces the desirable minute cracks in the hot slag and keeps the cartridge cool before its blowing out by the gasefication caused by an electrically ignited chemical heater unit, the gas escaping from lateral base holes.
