[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Croup IV] Fabric is fed through a liquid-treatment bath in a tensionless manner to permit free shrinkage by conveying it along its entire path through passages in a spread condition by the flow of the treating liquid itself. One or more U-shaped passages 1, may, as shown, be supplied with liquid at one end to which the web of fabric S is fed which liquid is withdrawn at the other end, a guide roller 11 of weight and displacement so as to float in the liquid being freely supported in the bendof the passage. When the passages are arranged vertically, the cross-section of the rising limbs 5 up which the fabric and liquid travel is smaller than the other descending limb 3 down which they travel to increase the velocity of the liquid and compensate for the added weight of the loaded fabric. The liquid level in the rising limb is kept lower than in the descending limb, and the liquid is circulated from' a chamber 4, which communicates with an elongated overflow slot 7, to a chamber 2, which surrounds, the iniet end and which is provided with baffles 10, by a pump or the like. From the upper end of the limb 5, the fabric S passes over a spreading roller 17, the drive on which is so arranged that, when its peripheral speed exceeds the conveying speed of the web, which would place the fabric under tension, a counterweighted arm 20 on which it is carried, pivots to permit the driving belt 23 for the roller 17 to slip.
