[Class 86] [Also in Group IV] In an apparatus in which acetylene and substantially dry calcium hydrate are obtained from calcium carbide and water, the charge in the reaction vessel 10, Fig. 1, is agitated by apparatus comprising (1) a frame 40, 41 keyed at 43 to an inner shaft 44, and (2) blades 50 keyed to a hollow shaft 48 which surrounds the shaft 44. Gearing is described whereby the frame 40, 41 and the blades 50 are caused to rotate in opposite directions. Fig. 2 shows a modified apparatus in which the reaction vessel 70 extends through the bottom 72 of a tank 71 to form an annular space 73 into which the hydrate is displaced. On its outer surface the tank 71 carries an annular water seal 76 into which the serrated skirt 79 of the tank cover 78 depends. An agitating device is provided comprising (1) a frame of the shape shown in Fig. 4, keyed to an outer shaft 83 which ends at a point near the bottom 84 of the vessel 70, and (2) blades 106 mounted on a shaft 93 which, below the vessel 70, is enclosed within the shaft 83. The frame comprises side-members 86 and cross-bars 85, 87 for agitating the charge in the vessel 70, arms 94, 95 for moving the hydrate in the annular space 73 to an aperture 140, vertical bars 89 which prevent deposition of hydrate on the walls of the tank 71, cross-bars 88, 90, supports 91, 92, and, at the centre of each of the members 85, 87, 88 and 90, hollow hubs which rotato freely on the shaft 93. The cross-bar 90 carries also bars 96, 97 for stirring the water in the seal 76 and one of the bars 97 carries a rod 113 which actuates a bell 114 as the frame rotates. Rotation of the shaft 93 is indicated by a bell 112, operated by an arm 111 carried on an extension of the shaft 93. Gearing is described whereby the shafts 83, 93 are rotated in opposite directions.
