Abstract
499,802. Look - out rejectors for vehicles. LUNDSTROM, N. O. V. July 30, 119,37, No. 21169. [Class 103 (ii)] An observation device for reflecting a view at the rear of a vehicle to the driver comprises means for displacing a mirror outwardly laterally of the vehicle, the means being adapted, or including a device adapted, during the displacement, automatically to adjust the angle of inclination of the mirror to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle in such relation to the degree of displacement as to cause the mirror whatever its position, to reflect the said view. As shown in the Figure the mirror 24 is adjustably mounted on the downwardly-extending outer end of a curved rod 21 which is secured at its inner end to a spring-pressed piston 20 slidable in a similarly-curved casing 17 fixed to the instrument-board 12, the rod being slidable through a plug 18 closing the outer end of the casing and through a corner post 14 of the vehicle body. Rotation of the rod is prevented by a screw 28 projecting from the piston 20 sliding in a slot 27 in the casing, the screw serving also to fix the piston in any position. The curvature of the casing and rod should be that of a parabola having its focus at the point c but for practical purposes the curvature may be that of a circular arc having its centre at the point e. Three other constructions are described in detail in which (a) the casing is mounted on the roof of the vehicle and the rod is non-rotatably mounted therein and is threaded to engage an internallythreaded sleeve adapted to be rotated, in order to move the rod laterally of the vehicle, by a piece of cord arranged near the driver ; (b) a plurality of solenoids are arranged on the casing and the rod carries an armature so that when the solenoids are energized the rod is moved laterally of the vehicle ; and (c) the casing is formed straight and the rod carries a device in which a mirror-carrying spindle is mounted and is adapted, as the rod is moved laterally, to be rotated automatically by gearing connected to a helically-grooved shaft which is rotated by engaging a fixed projection on the casing. In the last case, the rod carries a piston dividing the casing into two chambers connected to a control valve by means of which either chamber may be connected to the intake manifold of the engine.
