[Class 97 (i)] In apparatus comprising a single release member movable in different directions to free the mechanism for a single exposure or for continuous running, the two directions meet substantially at right-angles in a common inoperative position; the movements may be rectilinear in one direction and rotational in the other, and locking means preventing movement in each of the directions may be provided. Figs. 1 and 2 show a release member 4 rotatably mounted on a spindle 3 longitudinally movable against the action of a spring 6, and co-operating with a projection 13 on a disc 14 secured to the shaft 16 of the camera shutter 15. The member 4 has a neck 7 extending through an angular slot 8, 21, Fig. 4, in the camera casing 1, and carrying a head having a cylindrical surface 9 and a bevelled surface 22, respectively ribbed and serrated to facilitate finger operation. The mechanism is held stationary by the engagement of a stop 11 on the member 4 and the projection 13 ; rotation of the member 4 permits rotation of the shaft 16 until the projection encounters a second stop 12 moved into its path, and effects a single exposure; longitudinal movement of the member 4 frees both stops for continuous running. A modification is described wherein the operating head and the stops are relatively displaced longitudinally on the spindle, thus permitting the head to be assembled with other controls &c. on a control board. Fig. 8 shows locking means for the release comprising a plate 42 guided by the engagement of a slot 43 therein with pins 44, and slidable by a knob 46. Branches from the slot 43 may coincide, as shown, with the angular slot through which the neck projects, and permit operation of the release ; when the plate 42 is moved to its lowermost position, the neck assumes the position relative to the slot 43 previously occupied by the upper pin 44, and its movement is completely prevented.
