Abstract

499,403. Stereoscopes. LAND, E. H. June 21, 1937, No. 17269. [Class 97 (i)] A device for holding stereoscopic pictures for viewing with polarizers arranged in front of the eyes comprises means for holding a pair of stereoscopic pictures in positions in which the planes of the two pictures intersect, polarizing elements whereby the light beams from the two pictures are polarized in different directions and an element which is adapted partly to reflect and partly to transmit light rays and is so positioned that the transmitted beam from one of the pictures is superimposed, at least in part on the reflected beam from the other. In the form shown transparent pictures A and B illuminated by lamps 17 with reflectors 18 and diffusing screens 19 are positioned behind polarizing screens 20. Portions of the two beams are superimposed by the semi-reflecting surface 15. The combined beam is viewed through polarization screens 21a, 27b with planes of polarization arranged so that each eye sees only the appropriate image, A reflector 23 enables a second observer to see the remaining portions of the beams. The apparatus may be arranged to fold when not in use. For use with opaque pictures the illuminating means may be disposed at the side so that part of the light is reflected by the surface 15 to one picture and part is transmitted by this surface to the other. Specification 412,179 is referred to.
