Abstract

498,924. Brakes. GLASNER, R. W. July 14, 1937, No. 19488. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] The pressure discs 53 and 90 of a disc clutch and a disc brake are interconnected by rods 68 which are connected to each pressure disc by adjustable means and which are actuated in one direction, so as to apply the brake and disengage the clutch, by springs 75 arranged on the rods, and in the other direction, so as to engage the clutch and release the brake, by a pneumatically-operated piston 60. The clutch is adapted to connect the driving flywheel 33 of a press to the driven shaft 16. The brake comprises a disc 95 which is slidable on pins 96 fixed to the machine frame 27 and which is interposed between the disc 90 and a disc 81 fixed on the shaft 16, the disc 90 being splined on the hub of the disc 81. The annular piston 60 is fixed on the rods 68 and works in an annular cylinder 57 secured by its hub 58 to the shaft 16. Compressed air is adapted to be supplied to the cylinder, under the control of a valve, through passages 106 .. 109 in the shaft 16 and hub 58. Each spring 75 abuts at one end against the cylinder 57 and at the other end against a nut 73 adjustably threaded on the rod 68 so as to vary the tension of the spring. Each pin 68 has a flanged head 78 secured to a ring 79, adjustably threaded on the disc 90, by studs 78a. The cylinder 57 and disc 81 are formed with fan blades, appropriate apertures being provided in the brake parts to produce air currents. The facings of the discs 81 and 90 are in the form of segments separated by radial channels which form additional air passages.
