Abstract
498,736. Liquid and gaseous fuel furnaces. STEVENS, A. H. (General Furnaces Corporation) April 5, 1937, No. 9645. [Class 51 (i)] Combustion of liquid or gaseous fuel is effected in a combustion chamber, preferably of cylindrical form by forming a free spiral vortex of combustion supporting air which moves in a helical path throughout the length of the combustion chamber and introducing the fuel into the central zone of the vortex, combustion of the fuel being maintained after ignition throughout the length of the combustion chamber at the boundary of the fuel and the vortex of air. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, air under pressure is introduced from a conduit 7 into a spiral casing 6 under control of an adjustable vane 8 which varies the diameter of the central zone of the vortex into which fuel is introduced by a burner 13. Combustion is effected in the boiler flue 2 and the gases are discharged at C which may be in the form of a spiral casing. In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the spiral vortex of air is formed by vanes 8a pivoted at 9 and gas is introduced to the central zone of the vortex in a whirling stream by emitting the gas through pipes 12 tangentially arranged to a chamber at the front of the air supply casing. If desired, the gas may be supplied axially to the central zone of the vortex. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 17283/03, [Class 50], 183,394, 255,080, 275,793, [all in Class 51 (i)], 374,031, and 446,854.
