Abstract

498,556. Luminescent materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 23, 1937, No. 35667. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1936. [Class 98 (i)] Luminescent materials which may exhibit fluorescence or both fluorescence and phosphorescence are prepared by mixing a metal compound, an organic silicate, and an activator in a liquid medium, removing volatile constituents to form a gel, drying, grinding, and firing the product. For example, an organic silicate such as ethyl silicate is mixed with zinc nitrate in an alcoholic solution containing a small quantity of hydrochloric acid, and a small quantity of manganese nitrate is added. The mixture is heated to form a friable solid which is then crushed and heated to 110 to 140‹ C. to remove the volatile matter, ground, reheated to 350‹ C., reground, and fired at 1000 to 1300‹ C. The proportions used may be varied between equimolecular quantities of ZnO and SiO2 and equivalent quantities. In place of ethyl silicate, methyl, propyl, or amyl silicate may be used and the zinc salt may be replaced wholly or in part by salts of magnesium, cadmium, or beryllium. Specification 457,126 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the use of mixtures in which one of the constituents is in the form of a colloidal gel. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
