Abstract

498,076. Drawing tubes. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Wolverine Tube Co.) Oct. 5, 1937, No. 26980. [Class 83 (iv)] The floating plug 9 of a tube reducing die 10 is provided with a tail 18 engaging frictionally the tube bore, whereby the plug 9 is urged towards the die as the tube is drawn through. A wire 12 is secured by a threaded sleeve 13 to the rear face of the plug 9, and extends in the form of a compressible, flexible loop 18. Felt rings 15 are spaced on the wire 12 by washers 16 and a tapered member 17, and act as guides and lubricating means. The mandrel has a reduced portion 20 which reduces peeling of the plating material, and reduces building- up of the plating material on the actual drawing portion. The included angle of the plug portion of the mandrel is slightly greater than that of the tapered portion of the die. In a modification, the support for the lubricating rings and washers comprises a threaded member 30, Fig. 4, to which is soldered a coiled wire 31 which replaces the loop 18. In further modifications, the lubricating rings are replaced by a coiled spring 39, Fig. 6, which is packed with lubricant. Springs of different lengths may be employed to accommodate more or less lubricant.
