Abstract

Textile oils containing unsaturated compounds are rendered less liable to oxidation by heating with sulphur to such a temperature, usually below 200 DEG C., as to form a not unduly darkened oil which when cold does not stain metals and contains less than 1 per cent of sulphur. This may be effected by: (1) dissolving the sulphur in the oil at a lower temperature, e.g. below 125 DEG C. and then heating to the necessary temperature, e.g. 180 DEG C.; (2) adding a concentrated solution of sulphur in the oil or in a volatile solvent such as carbon-disulphide to the main body of oil held at the necessary temperature, e.g. 180 DEG C.; or (3) adding to the oil maintained at or afterwards brought to the necessary temperature, e.g. 180 DEG C. sulphur in a form which dissolves readily at this temperature; a suspension of fine crystals obtained by dissolving sulphur in a portion of the oil at below 125 DEG C. and cooling rapidly to 20 DEG C. is suitable. Oils treated include olive oil, arachis oil, sperm oil, oleic acid, oleyl alcohol, diglycol oleate, and polymerized cyclohexanol oleate. In an example, 5 lb. of sulphur is dissolved in 100 lb. of arachis oil at 110 DEG C. and the solution, or the suspension obtained by rapidly cooling to 20 DEG C. is added to 1900 lb. of the arachis oil which is maintained at 200 DEG C. for 30 min. or is at room temperature and is raised after the addition to 200 DEG C. for a few minutes.
