Abstract

Non-mineral oils for lubricating textiles are given an addition of less than 1 per cent of an organic S compound excepting sulphonates, sulphonated oils, xanthogenates, thiophosphoric esters and compounds of the formula R-S-R1-(COOH)n, in which R represents a fatty radicle and R1 an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radicle, to inhibit oxidation of the unsaturated compounds in the oil. The organic S compound may contain the group S=C, may be a thiourea, a thiocarbamate, a dithiocarbamate, or a disulphide such as a thiuram disulphide. Other compounds suitable are thioglycollic acid, thialdine, thiocarbanilide, thiosemicarbazide, thiodiphenylamine, mercaptobenzthiazole and the substances known under the Registered Trade Marks "Vulcafor TMT" and "Vulcafor TET." Most of these compounds are also vulcanization accelerators for rubber. The added S compound must have a solubility in the oil of at least 0,1 per cent. must not discolour the oil and an addition of under 1 per cent to a solution of 0,1 per cent of ferric oleate as catalyst in pure ethyl oleate should be sufficient to reduce the exothermic reaction in the Mackay test [Jour. Soc. Chem. Ind. 1896 (15), 90].
