Abstract

497,492. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 24, 1937, No. 17612. Convention date, June 24, 1936. [Class 35] The invention relates to dynamo-electric machines in which cooling liquid is circulated through hollow cooling elements interposed between groups of stator laminations, radial air passages being provided between some of the cooling elements and the adjacent groups of laminations. According to the invention, the stator is supported in a frame composed of longitudinally spaced annular members 30 connected by longitudinal tie members 31, and the cooling elements are formed of segments dimensioned to pass through the openings defined by the annular and longitudinal frame members so that they can be inserted and withdrawn in a radial direction, the cooling elements 18a in the central part of the stator being spaced from the laminations to form radial passages and those 18b in the end portions abutting closely against the adjacent laminations to form an imperforate structure ; the cooling elements are connected in series-parallel groups to a source of cooling liquid to produce substantially uniform cooling of the core. The cooling elements may be of the form described in Specification 484,371, the air passages in the central part of the core being formed by ribs thereon which space the elements from adjacent laminations. The stator frame is enclosed in a housing 13 comprising upper and lower halves bolted together at adjoining flanges 38 and consisting of sheets 35 reinforced by internal and external ribs 36. The various parts of the stator frame and housing are welded together and an external covering is provided to give a smooth outer surface. Cooling fluid is supplied and withdrawn by circumferential headers 25, 26 connected to longitudinal headers communicating with the groups of cooling elements. Cooling gas is circulated within the casing by fans 41 and passes from end chambers 40 over the end windings 16, along the air gap, outwards through the radial passages between the elements 18a and the laminations, and returns through openings 39 in the inner ribs 36 of the housing to the chambers 40. Hydrogen is preferably employed as the cooling gas and pipes 45 ... 49 are provided in the housing for the initial removal of air by the admission of carbondioxide, and the subsequent substitution of hydrogen for the carbon dioxide.
