[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group VI] Crates c filled with containers filled with milk, beer, &c. are traversed through pasteurizing apparatus comprising a hot air or hot water holding chamber A and cooling and chilling chambers B, C, by longitudinally disposed conveyer chains c<2>, Q, means being provided for transferring the crates c from one chamber to another, including a downwardly inclined slope into the cooling or chilling chamber with conveyer chains P moving more slowly than the main conveyer chains Q therein, and an upward slope out of this chamber with conveyer chains R moving more quickly than the main conveyer chains Q. As shown, bottles are supplied by a conveyer G, Fig. 1, to a shrouded table F and are placed by hand into crates c, supplied by a slide H, which are then placed on a feeding means D which takes them through light or flexible doors, slides or shutters c<4> into a chamber E from which they pass to chamber A through which they are carried by the chains c<2>, between which are fitted cross guides d<1> engaging the crates c, and which are supported on angle irons d and driven by sprockets d<2> actuated intermittently at predetermined intervals by timed mechanism. The crates c are pushed by an intermittently reciprocated rod d5, Fig. 3, having a push plate d<6> on to rollers c<1> from which they pass to the chains c<2>. The crates c next pass on to faster moving chains c3 which take them through an air-lock formed of two swinging doors or shutters j, j<1>, one of which is closed when the other is open, to a dead plate K which slopes down to the inlet end of the cooler B, Figs. 6, 7. The crates are taken down, into and out of the cooling liquid by chains P, Q, R, chains R having lugs z formed so as to assist the crates up the slope and to slip past when the passage is obstructed. The crates are pushed on to a dead plate N and then pass in similar fashion through the chilling chamber C from which they pass to a dead plate O and are fed by hand or conveyer to a cold store.
