Abstract

370,518. Cooking and sterilizing canned food &c. SERGEANT, C. R., 9, Byron Street, West Hartlepool, Co. Durham. Jan. 17, 1931, No. 1616. [Class 49.] In apparatus for cooking or sterilizing food &c. in sealed cans or other containers, the treatment vessel is provided with inlet and outlet valves and internally with prolonged paths for the cans so that the cans are fed into, passed through and delivered from the vessel in files. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, files of cans are supplied by a rotary valve 4 to the treatment vessel 1 and are carried therethrough on runways 19 by an endless chain conveyer 24 having cross-bars 25 which engage the cans. The files of cans leave the vessel 1 through a rotary valve 5 which is operated in synchronism with the valve 4 and the conveyer 24 from a common driving means. The conveyer 24 and runways 19 are supported on a framework 44 which has rollers 47 running on rails 48 on which it can be withdrawn from the vessel 1. When small cans are being treated, members 51, Fig. 4, may be secured by screws 51<1> in each compartment in the valve 4 so as to bring the outer periphery of the cans into line with that of the valve and prevent jamming of the valve. In another form, Figs. 5 and 6, the cans are supplied to and withdrawn from the vessel 1 by slide valves 4, 5 each having a series of openings 7, 16 to take a file of the cans. Alternatively, each valve 4, 5 may be formed of a number of valves 51, Fig. G, having a common gudgeon pin 53<1> and each having an opening 52 to take one can and sliding in a separate compartment in a casing 6a. The cans pass through the vessel 1 by gravity, moving step by step on runways 19. In other forms, a plurality of conveyers each moving in a direction opposite to the next one and taking the cans in a zig-zag path through the vessel, or an endless conveyer having pivoted cradles for the rows of cans may be employed. The Provisional Specification describes the use of similar apparatus for subsequent cooling of the cans.
