This invention relates to apparatus for carrying out a process for pasteurizing or sterilizing milk in bottles in which the milk is heated in bulk to a sterilizing temperature of about 1A5 Fahrenheit, filled into wide mouth bottles while still hot without cooling the bottles being closed by flexible discs and placed in a holding chamber for a predetermined period say minutes heated to a temperature of 145 F. and subsequently traversed into cooling and chilling chambers as described in my Patent No. 1,6d9,393.
In my Patent No. 1,649,393 apparatus is described for traversing the bottles singly or in a circular container through the holding chamber and into the cooling and chilling chambers and this application comprises apparatus adapted to receive rectangular crates of standard size placed in containers large enough to contain five standard crates.
The invention comprises three chambers, a holding chamber, a cooling chamber and a chilling chamber superimposed and mechanism for traversing the crates of bottles through the chambers, lowering them from one chamber into another and finally raising them from the chilling chamber when the operation is complete.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings zing chamber A in which the bottles are held for 30 minutes at a temperature of M5" F, a cooling chamber B and a chilling chamber 0. The floors of the chambers are fitted with rollers D to to facilitate the traverse of the bottle crates E and the container E which are pushed from end to end.
The holding chamber A lined with heat insulating material is fitted at the charging end with roller D at right angles to the rollers D over which the containers E with say five bottle crates therein are pushed into the chamber A. Above the rollers D an endless travelling chain F is mounted with a hnk or lug f projecting downward to engage the container E and push it in a lateral direct-ion from the rollers D on to the rollers 1). Each container pushes the adjacent one forward in front of it. The chamber A is heated by a coil (4 of steam or hot water pipes to the desired temperature of 145 F. j
At the end of the chamber A a cradle or platform G is fitted adapted to be raised and lowered and as thebottle container E is pushed forward it is pushed on to the cradle Gr and by it is lowered into the chamber B. The cradle or platform G is provided with sleeves G mounted 011 upright guide pillars g" and counter-balanced by a weight W. raising and lowering mechanism comprises endless chains 9 each rotating over four pulleys g mounted on shafts or studs. To eachchain is fitted one link g with laterally projecting spindle and a roller 9 on each end. The roller g at one end of the chain link works continuously round the channel guide H and the other roller as shown in Fig. 2 travels backwards and forwards in the channel guide H on the bottom of the cradle or platform G causing the latter to be raised and lowered as the chain travels round in the spockets g Below the cradle or platform G, a rotary endless chain K with projecting lug a is mounted and when the cradle is lowered the projecting lug engages the crate container E and moves it out of the cradle on to the rollers in the floor of the cooling chamber B.
The cooling chamber B is insulated from the heated holding chamber A and is provided with an air inlet Z) and an air outlet 6 cold air being drawn or blown through entering at Z) and escaping at 6 To cool the bottles carried in the crates E and container E at the delivery end of the chamber B a platform L is adapted to be lowered into and raised out of the chilling chamber C the platform being raised and lowered as described with reference to the cradle or platform G and below it in the chilling chamber C a rotary endless chain M with lug m is mounted to engage the containers E and move them forward into the chamber.

The heated chamber A is separated from the cooling chamber B by a rolling shutter or screen N one end of which is aliixed to the top J of the platform G and adapted to be raised and lowered therewith, the other end is affixed to a roller N around which the shutter wraps as the platform is raised.

At the discharge endofthe chilling chamber C the crates E and containers E are pushed on to a platform or cradle P counterbalanced by a weight- V and operated by a rotary chain 7) in a manner similar to that described with reference to the cradle G. The crates E and containers E are removed from the cradle or platform I at the dicharge aperture R. A
conveyor may be placed there to receive them and carry them away from the apparatus.
In operation a container E with say five crates E of bottles of hot milk is pushed into the apparatus over the roller path 1) and is pushed forward therefrom by the endless rotary chain F on to the rollers D in the holding chamber A and this process is continued until the chamber A is full, each container pushing for ard the one in front of it and taking 30 minutes to traverse the chamber A. Each crate or container is in turn pushed on to the platform or cradle G and lowered into the cooling chamber B and in a similar manner is pushed through this chamber, lowered into the chilling chamber C and finally raised from the apparatus.
What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. Apparatus for pasteurizing milk or other liquid in bottles contained in crates comprising three superimposed chambers, including a heated holding chamber, through which the crates are pushed, an endless rotary chain to engage the crates to feed them forward, a cooling chamber below the heated holding chamber, a platform to lower the crates into the cooling chamber, an endless rotary chain below the platform to draw the crates into the cooling chamber and an air inlet and outlet to the cooling chamber, a chilling chamber below the cooling chamber, a platform at the end of the cooling chamber to lower the crates into the chilling chamber, an endless rotary chain below the platform to draw the crates into the chilling chamber and a platform at the end of the chilling chamber to raise and discharge the crates therefrom.

Apparatus for pasteurizing milk or other liquid in bottles contained in crates comprising three superimposed chambers, including a heated holding, chamber, rollers arranged on the floor of the chamber over which the crates travel, an endless rotary chain to engage the crates to feed them forward, a cooling chamber below the heated holding chamber, a platform to lower the crates into the cooling chamber, an endless rotary chain below the platform to draw the crates into the cooling chamber, rollers on the floor of the cooling chamber over which the crates are pushed and means to force air therethrough, a chilling chamber below the cooling chamber, a platform at the end of the cooling chamber to lower the crates into the chilling chamber, an endless rotary chain below the platform to draw the crates into the chilling chamber, rollers on the floor of the chilling chamber over which the crates are pushed, a platform at the end of the chamber to raise and discharge the crates therefrom.

Apparatus for pasteurizing milk or other liquid in bottles contained in crates comprising three superimposed chambers, including a heated holding chamber, rollers arranged on the floor of the chamber over which the crates travel, an endless rotary chain to engage the crates to feed them forward, a cooling chamber below the heated holding chamber, a platforn'i to lower the crates into the cooling chamber, an endless rotarychain below the platform to draw the crates into the cooling chamber, rollers on the floor of the cooling chamber over which the crates are pushed and means to force air therethrough, a chilling chamber below the cooling chamber, a platform at the end of the cooling chamber to lower the crates into the chilling chamber, an endless rotary chain below the platform to draw the crates into the chilling chamber, rollers on the floor of the chilling chamber over which the crates are pushed, a platform at the end of the chamber to raise and discharge the crates therefrom, and means for raising and lowering the platforms.
