Abstract

497,484. Sterilizing-apparatus. ROWSELL, E. A.. and SMITH, C. H. June 17, 1937, No. 16807. [Class 81 (i)] A sterilizer for dairy plant and utensils, kitchen utensils, &c., comprises a chamber 10 mounted on a frame carrying a boiler 21 which is connected to the chamber by a short pipe connection 29 provided with a two-way cock 30 by which low-pressure steam can be supplied either to the chamber or to an external connection 31 for steaming articles too large to be placed in the chamber. The chamber 10 is made of galvanized sheet metal, covered with heat insulating material with an outer covering of thin metal. The end of the chamber remote from that shown in the Figure is provided with a hinged, preferably lagged, door formed with a rubber sealing ring and adapted to be closed by cam or toggle clamps. A thermometer is fitted in the door. The boiler is formed with detachable end plates, that remote from the one, 23, shown, being provided with a cock for the withdrawal of hot water, a connection near the bottom for a valved pipe leading from the bottom of chamber 10 and through which condensed steam is returned to the boiler, and a further connection carrying a pipe 28 extending from the bottom of the boiler to the top of the chamber 10 to act as an excess pressure release means. A safety valve may also be provided on the boiler. The other end plate 23 carries the pipe 29, and a fitting through which water is supplied from a main supply, or from a tank carried by the chamber. Normally, water enters the boiler through pipe 32 and a float-operated valve in the boiler, but when hot water is desired, the boiler is filled by opening the cock 36 in a byepass. The boiler is covered by a casing 37, and the interspace may be lagged, or left open for circulation of the hot gases from oil burners 39 fed from reservoir 40. The heating means may alternatively be gas burners, or an immersion heater carried by one of the end plates, and controlled if desired by an automatic time switch. Hinged or detachable valances 38, one of which is shown, may depend from the lower edges of the boiler casing 37 to protect the burners from draughts. Specification 318,479, [Class 81 (i)], is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the two-way cock may be replaced by a single-way cock, separate connection being made to the boiler for the external steam supply. High pressure steam may be used, in which case an additional water storage vessel is preferably arranged over the boiler. A separate thermostatically-controlled hot water supply may be carried by the frame.
