497,279. Temperature responsive actuating-elements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and STENT, T. F. June 15, 1937, No. 16627. [Class 64 (ii)] A thermostatic switch for controlling the temperature of an electrically heated plate 1, such as an electric iron, comprises a bimetallic strip 3 mounted in a stepped recess 2 in the plate and embedded therein in a substance 4 which is a better conductor of heat than air and which is liquid at a temperature below that at which the switch is required to operate, the substance being retained in the recess by a flexible diaphragm 5 through which the motion of the strip is conveyed to the switch. A pillar 6 secured to the strip and passing through the diaphragm contacts with the upper arm 7 of a switch 8, upward flexure of the strip, after the substance 4, if solid, has melted, separating the contacts of the switch and opening the circuit of the heater. Embedding substances specified comprise Woods metal, type metal, mercury, oil and paraffin wax.
