Abstract
497,113. Gas-metering apparatus; gas bags ; valves. OHIO CHEMICAL & MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 18, 1937, Nos. 31745 and 31746. Convention dates, Dec. 11, 1936 and July 2, 1937. [Classes 54 and 135] [Also in Group VI] In anµsthetic-administering apparatus the flow of gas or vapour is under the control of a device actuated by the patient or by the anµsthetist, and permitting only a predetermined small quantity of gas to flow at each actuation, the flow ceasing whenever the device is stationary in any position. The control device 23, Fig. 2, is actuated by a hand-pressed lever connected to a Bowden cable mechanism 40, 40a and comprises inlet and outlet spring- pressed valves 24, 27, mounted by screwnipples on the casing 23, and having spindles 24e, 27e engageable by a rocking arm 30. The arm is pivoted in a spindle 31 and is normally biassed by a spring 34 on its operating rod 32 to hold valve 27 open. On pressing up rod 32, by a head 36 on the Bowden wire 40a clamping a sealing diaphragm 38, arm 30 is rocked first to close valve 27 and then open valve 24, thus admitting a small quantity of gas which on reversal of the arm is drawn through valve 27 by inhalation of the patient. The casing 23 is connected by a pipe 25 with a small reservoir which may be housed within the stand pillar of the apparatus. In a modification, the outlet valve 102d, Fig. 5, is slidably mounted and spring-pressed upwardly in a frame 113 to engage a seating 102 in the outlet pipe 117 when the frame is raised by the Bowden cable head 107 against a spring 119. A rod 115 on the frame engages the spindle 116 of, and lifts the inlet valve 101 after the outlet valve is closed. Bores 105 in the valve-seating block 104 conduct the gas to the outlet. A gas-andair bag 49, Fig. 3, is mounted to surround a non-collapsable corrugated rubber tube 43 having perforations 44 communicating with the bag. The tube 43 has at one end a ring of air inlets 47 controlled by a disc valve 48, and at the other a disc valve 51.
