Abstract

Chromium-nickel steel alloys which are resistant to localized corrosive attack by the action of stagnant sea water or other chloride-containing water having a pH value less than 7 consist of 16-30 per cent of chromium, 7-20 per cent of nickel, not more than 0,2 per cent of carbon, 0,5-4,0 per cent of manganese, 1-5 per cent of molybdenum, and niobium in an amount at least four times the carbon content but not over 1,5 per cent plus ten times the carbon content, with or without up to 1 per cent of silicon, the balance being wholly iron. Specific examples are also given of similar alloys without niobium, without molybdenum, and without either niobium or molybdenum. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also alloys of similar composition but not containing niobium, the manganese content then being 1,5-5 per cent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
