Abstract

496,852. Spring frames for motorcycles &c. STEYR DAIMLER PUCH AKT.- GES. Feb. 17, 1938, No. 4989. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1937. [Class 136 (iii)] In a spring suspension for the rear wheels of vehicles, and more particularly motor-cycles, the wheel is supported by one or more pairs of link members capable of swinging upwards and downwards, the springs acting on both the link members of a pair in such a way that the reaction force of the springs is also used for springing the wheel. In the form shown, links 2, 3 on each side of the wheel are pivoted at 4, 5 respectively to the motor-cycle frame 1 and at 6, 7 to parts (e.g. the gear-box 9 &c.) carrying the rear wheel 8. A tension spring 15 on each side of the frame is connected to an arm 16 of each link 3 and to an arm 17 pivoted to the frame 1 and geared by toothed segments 18, 19 to the corresponding link 2, the parts being so proportioned that the resistance of the spring 15 progressively increases more rapidly than the displacement of the wheel. The wheel axle 10 moves in an arc concentric either with the universal joint 13 of a shaft drive 14, or with the driving-sprocket when a chain drive is employed. In a modification, the inner arms of the links 2, 3 are directed towards one another, and are both connected directly to the tension spring 15.
