Abstract

496,770. Counter stiffeners for boots and shoes. BURGESS, A. F. (Paper Patents Co.) Oct. 21, 1937, No. 28727. [Class 17 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A composite two-ply sheet material, specially intended for use in making shoe counters, comprises a backing ply of flexible, resilient, artificial leather consisting of a number of superposed gossamer-thin felted sheets of cellulose fibres, impregnated with a rubber binder and compacted, and a stiffening ply of relatively stiff material, e.g. fibre board. In a shoe counter, Figs. 3 and 5, the backing ply 12 extends beyond the stiffening ply 10 to form a free marginal flange 15 which is preferably bevelled to form a feather edge.
