496,541. Jigs for assembling workpieces. JUNKERS FLUGZEUG-UNDMOTORENWERKE AKT.-GES. June 22, 1938, No. 18556. Convention date, June 24, 1937. [Class 83 (iii)] In a method of aligning the positions of the structural components of jigs and workpieces during assembly, apertured diaphragms are mounted at the ends of the jig &c., a source of light is placed behind one aperture and further apertured diaphragms are placed between the end ones and arranged with the apertures in line by sighting through to the source of light. The straight line so produced may form a datum line for positioning the structural components and a wire may be passed through the diaphragms to be supported by the apertures and so form a straight rigid reference line. As applied to the assembly of an aeroplane wing, two such lines 23, 24 meeting at the source of light 25 define a reference plane and are observed through apertures in the diaphragms 10, 11. Intermediate diaphragms 18..20 are positioned by these lines and further lines 28 at any angle, or vertical lines 26, may be used. The apertures in the diaphragms are preferably of the iris type so that their size can be reduced continuously during sighting to facilitate the positioning of the intermediate diaphragms.
