Abstract

In the manufacture of distempers, washes and the like, sesame or til seed cake is softened, e.g. by treatment with hot water, and is then ground with a preservative, a filler, a binder, and, if required, a pigment. Prior to softening, the seed cake may be bleached, e.g. by successive treatments with sodium hydroxide solution, which may contain cresol, and chlorine water. According to examples: (1) a dry distemper consists of ground bleached sesame seed cake, borax, chalk, cresol, gum and glue, with or without a pigment; (2) an oil-bound distemper consists of ground bleached sesame or til seed cake, borax, soap, lithopone, chalk, glue, linseed oil, rosin, ethyl alcohol, cresol, formaldehyde solution and water, with or without a pigment or dye.
