Abstract

495,989. Electromagnets ; locking rods. PAYNE, J. V., and LONDON PASSENGER TRANSPORT BOARD. Sept. 3, 1937, No. 24079. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXIV] A remotely-controlled member such as a plunger movable along a guide or tube and actuated electromagnetically in one or both directions, is comprised of at least two parts 1, 2 normally separated by gravity or a spring 11, such separation serving to actuate means for restraining movement of the plunger. The restraint is provided by balls or wedges 12 which are forced by a tapered collar 6 into contact with the bore of the guide tube 3. The plunger portions 1, 2 are magnetic so that when the coils 13, 14 are appropriately energized for actuation of the device, the portions approach one another and allow the balls 12 to move away from the tube 3. Movement in one direction may be effected mechanically.
