Abstract

495,933. Treating liquids with gases. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Chemical Construction Corporation) Feb. 28, 1938, No. 6283. [Class 55 (ii)] In apparatus for effecting contact between gas and liquid comprising a container 1 for vertical passage of gas with horizontal trays 2 retaining a uniform depth of liquid thereon, dams 14 with their upper edges relow the liquid surface extend from bubble caps 24 to the periphery of the container and the kinetic energy of part of the gas, i.e. gas rising through supplemental apertures 11, causes the liquid to flow in a closed circuit over the trays. A temperature-regulating coil 28 preferably surrounds a central bubble cap. The caps surmounting the supplemental apertures 11 comprise a dome portion 40 and a liquid conduit section made up of asymmetrically associated channel members 53 spaced to form restricted gas outlets 58, gaps being left for gas risers above the apertures 11, and the front and rear walls of the dome portion which extend down to the level of the members 53 at these places having similar gas outlet slots. As gas escapes therethrough the froth formed rises vertically against and over the dam 14, liquid thereupon flowing through the channel members 53 and over the dam to return to the other side of the tray around the bubble caps 24.
