A column for gas-liquid contacting comprises an exchange chamber formed of a base column plate 2 and boundary walls, a pipe inlet 7a and a pipe outlet associated with a tubular guide cover having upper and lower apertured ends. Preferably the base plate is disc-shaped and the boundary wall is substantially perpendicular to the base plate. The pipe inlet and outlet may be disposed vertically and the base column plate horizontally. The upper apertured end of the guide cover may terminate in a straight or curved tube. As shown in Fig. 1, gas may flow through a bubble cap 3 in the direction of arrow F 1 into liquid 5. Liquid may flow through pipe inlet 7a on to the base column plate 2. The outlet pipe 7 preferably consists of a pipe section which passes through the base column plate 2 and is covered by tubular guide cover 8, the lower apertured end of which projects into the liquid. The liquid may enter through the opening 9 along the arrow F 2 under cover 8 and passes through inlet opening E into the pipe outlet 7. The gas to be contacted with liquid passes through the liquid and rises upwardly in a substantially non- turbulent manner through cover 8 to escape through upper apertured end 11. In a modification (not shown), outlet pipe 7 does not extend above the column plate 2 and the upper apertured end of the guide cover projects above the level of liquid supported by the base plate such that gas collecting beneath the cover discharges into free air space within the column. In Figs. 6 and 7 (a constructional form for smaller column plates 2) the gas supply is not effected through a centrally arranged bubble cap 3, but through a depending bubble cap 3 in the form of a dipping jacket extending along the edge of the column wall.
